Liverpool City Police

The Liverpool city police force was started as early as 1836 by the Liverpool Borough Council. Prior to 1800's, the police was known as Liverpool Borough police. The first Chief Constable of Liverpool city police was Michael James Whitty, the man responsible for the establishment of Daily post.

After him, the Liverpool city police had seen many prolific and efficient officers taking charge. In the first 50 years of its existence, the Liverpool police force hired horses from civilian firms to provide all the transport ranging from horse drawn fire engines to prison vans. Later the Watch Committee and the then Chief Constable decided to buy horses for the force in order to save money.

This gave birth to the Mounted department and Transport branch of the Liverpool city police. Initially the force operated with eight horses and expanded with another six in 1887. With the city's growth the police force also grew by increasing their number of horses in the mounted branch. Today the Liverpool City police operate at six geographical venues - Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley, St Helens, Liverpool North and Liverpool South.

The city police at Liverpool North area cover over 30 square miles, which includes City Centre, Docklands and inner city wards. Liverpool North is a thriving Chinese community along with well-established Indian and Irish communities. Liverpool South is a largely residential area and the city police cover the six neighborhoods, each with its own inspectors and team of Sergeants and Constables.
