Newcastle Metro

The Newcastle Metro is one of the cleanest and most efficient rapid transit systems in UK. It provides easy access to the city with five major stations. The Newcastle metro coverage extends to Whitley Bay in the northeast to the Newcastle Airport in the northwest and also to the South Shields in the southeast and down south to the Gateshead town center. The metro leaves Newcastle airport every 10 minutes and just takes 20 minutes to reach the city centre. Timetables and ticket information of the metros are available from the Airport tourist information centre and as well as the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive, Nexus.

The metro has underground sections at Central Newcastle and Gateshead along with short tunnels between Tynemouth and North Shields and between Chillingham Rd and Byker. The platforms at Howdon, Fawdon and Kingston Park are not opposite each other but are on either side of the street that crosses the tracks. Remarkably this is the only metro in the world where one train comes through the same station twice, in the case at Monument. Here the yellow line train starts and runs through the upper level at Monument crossing Manors Station. After running the loop along the coast it comes back and runs through Monument station on the lower level. The Newcastle metro uses 4-car trains and two cars are permanently connected to allow free movement between them. Major stations are announced by the driver who sits in a cabin, which only occupies half of the train's front leaving the right half for passengers.
